2025–Present | Instructional Assistant – CTE Video Production | Las Vegas, Nevada

I joined Doral Academy Red Rock High School’s CTE Video Production program in February 2025 and returned for the 2025–2026 and again this school year as an Instructional Assistant. My primary responsibility within the program is supporting the production of the school’s recurring student newscasts and helping ensure that broadcasts are completed on schedule and meet established production standards.

My role combines student instruction and coaching with production coordination, technical troubleshooting, quality control, and workflow management. I work closely with students as they develop the technical and professional skills required to move a broadcast from planning through final delivery.

I am primarily responsible for coordinating and supporting the student broadcast workflow, with an emphasis on producing consistent, timely, and increasingly polished school news programming.

Students are expected to function as members of a production team rather than completing the broadcast as an isolated classroom assignment. I help students understand their individual responsibilities, meet production deadlines, troubleshoot technical issues, and recognize how each production role contributes to the quality of the final program. A major part of my role is maintaining consistency across a production completed by rotating student teams with different levels of experience. I monitor the production process, identify issues that could prevent a broadcast from being completed on time, and provide technical or instructional support when students encounter problems.

Quality control includes reviewing pacing, audio, framing, graphics, editing, transitions, organization, and overall presentation while helping students understand why those elements matter in professional broadcast production.

Students learn that successful broadcasting requires both visible and behind-the-scenes responsibilities. I help train students to understand production roles individually while also recognizing how those positions function together as a complete production team.

  • Anchoring & Reporting – Story presentation, interviewing, delivery, writing, and preparation
  • Directing & Technical Production – Production coordination, switching, timing, studio communication, and troubleshooting
  • Camera & Audio – Framing, camera operation, microphones, levels, and production setup
  • Editing & Graphics – Post-production, titles, lower thirds, visual assets, audio, and final delivery
  • Field Production – Interviews, event coverage, photography, B-roll, and location production

Competition & Career Readiness

The CTE Video Production program extends beyond classroom assignments by providing students with opportunities to apply their skills in competitive and professional-style environments. I have supported student preparation and participation in SkillsUSA video and broadcast competition activities. During the 2026–2027 school year, the program is also expanding its competition experience through Student Television Network (STN), providing students with additional opportunities to benchmark their work against secondary media programs from across the country.

CTE & Career Readiness

My approach to broadcast production emphasizes skills that transfer beyond the classroom. Students are expected to develop technical competency while also learning the workplace behaviors required in media production: preparation, communication, reliability, collaboration, deadline management, problem-solving, and responsibility for finished work.

The goal is not simply to produce a school newscast. The broadcast serves as a recurring production environment in which students practice the technical and professional expectations associated with working media organizations.

Program Development

During the 2026–2027 school year, I am continuing to help strengthen the broadcast-production system through clearer student roles, production standards, improved studio workflows, expanded school and athletic coverage, competition preparation, and stronger connections between student work and career-ready portfolios.

My current role brings together my previous experience in professional digital media, media education, student broadcasting, and technology instruction within a formal high-school CTE environment. My focus is on developing production systems that allow students to move from learning individual technical skills to operating as accountable members of a functioning media team and producing work suitable for a public audience.
